How to Perfect the Art of Refinishing Parquet Floors
Most homeowners dread the idea of refinishing parquet floors, hence the reason why they do not want it installed in their homes. However, this matter should not be that much of a concern. If you want your home to look elegant, then I suggest that you consider the idea of laying out your floors with parquet. Refinishing this kind of flooring product should not keep you from providing your house with a royal look.
A parquet floor is among the kinds of wooden floors which gives your home a majestic look. This is created out of several wood pieces which are fitted together, making your floors look like a puzzle or mosaic. I know some people whose entire living room is fitted with this. Believe me, it definitely improved the appearance of their homes. If you prefer parquet as your wood flooring, you can opt to have it placed within your kitchen, your bathroom or at your child’s playroom.
How to Refinish Your Parquet Floors
The first thing to consider when refinishing parquet flooring is the method of sanding. In order for you to achieve satisfactory results, you should treat the process with patience. Yes, like any other types of job, hard work and diligence pay off big time. Rushing off to get the job done right away will only provide you with marred parquet floors.
I have read that an orbital sander which is held by hand does the job of refinishing parquet floor better than drum sanders. You might want to consider this idea also. Although the task takes long, the risk of damaging the beautiful inlay of your floors comes next to never. Using this device calls for control and proper handling. Before you use this, it would be wiser if you read its brochure first, in order for you to know how to use it properly.
For the open parts of the floor, you might want to use belt sanders that measure from 3 to 4 inches. These will help hasten your job a little. But when it comes to the edges, the orbital sander and a scraper are handy. These aid with getting old finishes out of the picture.
The Benefit of Orbital Sanders
Other than giving parquet flooring a smoother surface, orbital sanders produce lesser dusts. You can choose to purchase a sander that comes with a bag, in order to catch the sand dust. You won’t have to worry about protecting your eyes from being exposed to the dust. Plus, you can’t inhale sand dusts anymore.
Staining Your Parquet Floors
Refinishing parquet flooring may also include staining. This is done once you are through sanding it. If you opt for polyurethane, you might want to apply the floor with three coats of it. On the other hand, you can also go for wax or oil. Whatever you want to use, rest assured that your refinishing task is fantastic.
I guarantee you that your parquet floors will be better looking when you add refinishing touches. Whether you just want to sand without applying stains or you sand and stain it, nothing can stop you from creating an elegant look for your flooring.

Wow.Thanks.3/4s of my house is ‘oak’ parkay flooring. I’m willing to sand however I have worn paths throughout. The wood is discolored a weathered gray in those areas. I’ve sanded patches by hand but it still looks soiled. I like the color and the house is so small I don’t know if it can handle a darker stain. Any solutions?

@sari:
You can cure the gray by feeding the wood. Apply raw linseed oil with a brush every few days until it will not soak up anymore. Wipe off excess. Your floor will be beautiful!

My parquet is in good shape but it is dull. I thought it would be a good idea to apply a coat of poly but I am not sure. Any suggestions. thanks

I need to repair several tiles of our parquet flooring. I sanded those squares and then went over with stain. Problem, I got carried away and stain lots more squares (without sanding). Now the stain is still tacky and shiny, it doesn’ just wipe up. How to I correct this problem, how do I remove the stain that won’t penetrate.

Hi. What’s the minimum thickness for sanding? I have 1/4″ thick, 6-finger white oak parquet, glued down to cement. It was installed in my apartment in the 1970’s. Thanks.

Our parquet floor is in a bathroom and lead out into a main hallway. It has had become water stained and looks black in some places. Can we still stain or use the linseed oil to regain the finish? And when we sand the bathroom if we have to, would we have to sand the enitre floor to be sure the stains match once we begin staining?

@kathy izral: I had not heard of the linseed oil treatment. I am currntly underway refinishing parquet floors. I used oxalic acid (wood bleach) to get out the black water (or whatever) stains and it worked quite well. I followed directions for the first application but it was not strong enough so I re-applied mixing the solution to double strength and letting it air dry instead of neutralizing and it worked very well. I had a VERY dark stain to get out.
